soi Convent[ion] — Liv

Soi Convent[ion] pavilion presents the creation and sharing of archival efforts as invitation, welcoming engagement in the space/place of Soi Convent through three acts aligned with the Bangkok Biennial schedule.

Soi Convent acts as a connection between two major Bangkok thoroughfares (Silom and Sathorn roads). The name derives from St. Joseph’s convent and school, established in 1907 which occupies the short street with an all-encompassing stature via the concrete walls that separate these institutions from publicly accessible space. Flanked by financial, business, and more nefarious sex tourism districts, the street hosts a Catholic Carmelite monastery which is accessible by ringing a small doorbell on the baby blue facade and a Christian Protestant church which sits on gifted land dating back to King Rama V. A private British hospital (British Nursing Home (BNH)) was granted permission from King Chulalongkorn to begin serving the foreign community in 1897. Currently, a large development under construction hides behind tall corrugated steel walls with promises of mixed-use commercial and office space. Vacant lots and empty storefronts are intermixed with small businesses, some of which have been in operation for decades and others that are newly established. A devoted congregation of street vendors moves in a circadian rhythm amongst the roots of these institutions, serving the local community.

ACT 1: COLLECTIONS (Oct 31st-Nov 21st 2020)

Through a process of objective observations and documentation, a testament of ‘collections’ will be generated using the space of Soi Convent as raw material and resource. The collections will be sourced from the rooted institutions that have demarcated the area (top-down) and the people that create the community (bottom-up). These archival efforts will be made into online open-source material available as site, prospect, and capital. The material presented further acts as invitation, welcoming proposal for works to be made in the form of both online and physical projects through an open call. Daily offerings from October 31-November 21, 2020.

LIV_ID Collective introduces Act 2 of Soi Convent[ion] pavilion: NEGOTIATIONS, exploring virtual methods of exhibition and engagement that support spontaneous and diverse forms of interaction.
Building upon the archives of material generated through ACT 1: Collections and utilizing the space of Soi Convent as both raw material and resource, ACT 2: NEGOTIATIONS invites artists to explore how site-specificity and community engagement can be achieved through altered frameworks and actions. Digital platforms ranging from Google reviews and Shopee to NFT marketplaces, Spotify, and TikTok find new purpose when brought into partnership with the Soi Convent Community and artists through Soi Convent[ion] Pavillion. Discover, interact and connect with communities and artists through real-time engagement with soi Convent[ion] pavilion.

ACT 3: REFLECTIONS- 2022

Through an online and physical publication, ACT 1 and 2 of Soi Convent[tion] will be reflected and built upon through critical and contemplative documentation and writings. The third and final act will be ministered as a culminating collection of Soi Convent [ion].
