UMBRELLA_LA! LA! LA!, a new, shared collective "brand" celebrates the core values that participating vendors defined as characteristics of their community, imprinted onto the inner canvas area of its umbrellas. Printed in a similar color to the fabric itself, the words remain "hidden" unless illuminated by the light, referencing how these values emanate from the vendor's presence rather than their product. Alongside these qualities of the community's collective identity, the individual shop owner's name is rendered in bright, bold lettering running along the umbrella's canopy flap. In addition to its street-level marketing, UMBRELLA_LA! LA! LA! further operates via popular e-commerce platform, Shopee where the brand advertises the sale of various types of "shade" as defined by the vendor's core values. Working from within, UMBRELLA_LA! LA! LA! finds opportunity in existing systems to create an authentic space capable of amplifying both collective and individual voices, in chorus and at equal volume - LA! LA! LA!

Rebecca Vickers is an interdisciplinary American artist based in Bangkok, Thailand. Rebecca's practice utilizes a process of collection, framing instances of the everyday in a manner through which their extraordinary nature is brought front and center, revealing new opportunities for experiments in collectivity. She is a co-founder of Bangkok-based LIV_ID collective, teaches visual art at Mahidol University International Demonstration School, has contributed words on pages to art4d magazine, and plays guitar in the indie-pop band VIPED. Rebecca’s work has been shown internationally, with recent exhibitions at YEO Workshop, Singapore (2015), the Bangkok Biennial, Thailand (2018), Art Teleported, New York, USA (2019), and the Arts+Literature Laboratory, Madison, WI, USA (2020). Rebecca served as the Artist-in-Residence for the Madison Public Library in Madison, Wisconsin, USA (2020-2021), is currently a doctoral candidate in the Philosophy of Art and Design program at Chiang Mai University, Thailand and has an upcoming Community and Education Residency with the Singapore Art Museum in the Spring of 2022.
