Pok Pok- Gabriel Camelin, Jean-David Caillouët

Soi Convent, in one street, offers everything that Bangkok has to offer: a somtum bowl where all classes, religions, ages, nationalities are colliding. In this culturally diverse neighbourhood, street food vendors, moto-taxi drivers, and security guards are witnesses of the social and economic change of the city. Many people have lived and worked in this area for decades, which is currently profoundly impacted by Covid, gentrification and an economic shift to other parts of town. Pok Pok is a short video tribute to the cultural diversity of the residents and people from Soi Convent. Using collage, visual effects and stop-motion, Pok Pok reverses the roles, and scale, giving visibility and prominence to the people of Soi Convent compared to the offices and infrastructure surrounding them. The title “Pok Pok” is often associated with the sound of the mortar from Somtum vendors, a food popular among taxi drivers, office and construction workers, among others.

Gabriel Camelin is a french photographer and videographer based in Bangkok. Gabriel majored in film studies and visual communication; his work often relies on image manipulation and visual effects on both video and photography. Versatile, Gabriel has directed several music videos and documentaries and worked on music festivals and concerts as a live visual performer. Gabriel Camelin is currently a program coordinator and full-time lecturer at Silpakorn University International College for the Digital Communication Design program. He has been living in Thailand since 2004.

Jean-David Caillouët is a French sound and visual artist. Exploring the boundaries between tradition and innovation, many of his recent projects combine thematic audio-visual collages with the new aesthetics of digital media. He has performed internationally playing well-respected festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe, the Soundbridge festival in Malaysia or the European music festival in Hanoï. He has produced sound and music for films, animations, theatre, and dance. His installation projects have been exposed in places as varied as the historical caves of Kent’s Cavern in the UK to Bangkok’s Art and Culture Center. (BACC) In 2015 he co-curated AS(EAR)N, an interactive installation project celebrating the rich cultural diversity of Southeast Asia from a sonic perspective. He is currently working on a series of film documentaries, portraying some of the musical pioneers in Southeast Asia. He has studied at Brussels Royal Conservatoire, Dartington College of Arts, and completed his Ph.D. at Edinburgh University. He currently lectures in music composition, multimedia, and production at PGVIM in Bangkok.

Gabriel Camelin (กาเบรียล) เป็นช่างภาพและวิดีโอชาวฝรั่งเศสในกรุงเทพฯ กาเบรียลจบการศึกษาเอกภาพยนตร์และการสื่อสารด้วยภาพ โดยงานของเขามักอาศัยการปรับแต่งภาพและเล่นกับเอฟเฟกต์ในวิดีโอและภาพถ่าย ผ่านการทดลองทำงานหลากหลายด้าน กาเบรียลกำกับมิวสิควิดีโอและสารคดีหลายเรื่อง รวมถึงกำกับภาพในเทศกาลดนตรีและคอนเสิร์ต ปัจจุบันกาเบรียลเป็นผู้ประสานงานและอาจารย์ประจำที่วิทยาลัยนานาชาติ Silpakorn University International College for the Digital Communication Design เขาอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ปี 2547
