Journeys- Rosalia Namsai Engchuan, Thanart Rasanon

This work is a collaboration between anthropologist and artist Rosalia Namsai Engchuan and sound artist Thanart Rasanon. Our conversations and research pivoted around the arrival of Christianity in Thailand. What struck us most is that it went hand in hand with the opening of Siam to international trade and capitalism. Rather than resting on the abstract plane for too long we investigated our own experiences to trace how these histories materialize in the everyday mundane realities of our lives. Thanart went to a Christian school and Rosalia grew up in Germany with a Thai father. The hierarchy of different ways of knowing caused by epistemicide has been a reality before we even had a language to label all these feelings of unrest. In the video our personal experiences with epistemicide converge with the stories of a midwife practicing the allegedly barbaric ‘roasting’ ritual yu fai (resting by the fire).

Rosalia Namsai Engchuan is an anthropologist and artist based between Berlin and Southeast Asia. Her research based works are interested in the traces, faces and reverberations of epistemicide. Making and holding space is a foundational element in her practice of creating speculative vessels that aim to undo the underlying structures of colonialism, race, gender and class that shape the production of our world. Assuming radical inter-dependency as an ontological fact she aims to create worlds otherwise together with her research collaborators. The work presented here is part of her ongoing speculative research project into the entanglements (present, historical and in the future) of spirituality, medicinal knowledges, technologies and capitalism. Her work has been presented at galleries and film festivals in Europe, Southeast Asia and the US.

Thanart Rasanon aka Pete or Pete TR is a music producer, musician, DJ and blozxom co-creator. He is an alumnus of Goethe Talents 2020 program. His latest work, ‘Memory Journey’ (2019), is a mini album with each track accompanied by a memoir relating to multiple personal experiences. He has associated with artists such as 2010 Cannes Palme d'Or award-winning Thai film director, Apichatpong Weerasethakul & Japanese Avant-Garde Musician, Otomo Yoshihide. His monthly radio show "M.SEA Vibe", Explore, Exchange and Connect the vibe of Mainland Southeast Asia and the Global innovative music on dublab, Non-Profit Radio Station in 2019 - 2020.
